Icellars Estate Winery is a small boutique winery located in Niagara-on-the-Lake at the heart of Niagara Wine Country. It was founded in 2010 by the ICEL family who pays tribute to their homeland Anatolia, now present day Turkey. The early civilization of Hittites founded their empire on these fertile lands over 4,000 years ago and are credited for founding modern day winemaking techniques.

Icellars vineyards and winery are fittingly located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, birthplace and origin of the Canadian Wine Industry. Small batch wines are produced from the farm and inspired by classic winemaking styles deeply rooted in the history of viticulture and winemaking.

Our label design captures the icons of an ancient life. The stag design is inspired by the wine drinking vessels used by the Hittites of Anatolia. Incorporated into the label is the Hittite sun disk – a symbol of prosperity, fertility and celebration.

An Ancient Civilization

The Anatolian civilization of Hittites called their lands 'Wiyana Wanda' meaning “Land of Wine”. Many linguists in fact believe the word 'wiyana' is the root of the words ‘vinum' in Latin and ‘wine’, in western languages. In Hittites’ social lives wine was the primary libation offered to the gods during rituals attended by royalty and high governors. Provisions protecting viticulture in Hittite law, and the evidence of customs celebrating each vintage with a holiday, suggest that wine was important to both ancient economies and cultural practices. Their traditional wine jugs were fashioned in the image of the sun, in honour of their gods.
